No snow....for now.

We've had temps above 40....clear up to 65 F. for a couple days. Now we're back down to 40's again and going to be dropping.

Lots of wind last night, kept me awake. You know when you're in that half asleep stupor where you worry about all sorts of stupid stuff? Well, last night with all the wind (gusts to 50 mph) I was just sure one of my bird feeders would fly off and crash into the livingroom window. I am happy to report that did not happen. Although they blew around enough that Mr. Squirrel was able to reach it and have a good feed. Here's one of 72 shots I took this morning at a very disgusted Mr. Squirrel after I moved the feeder back out of reach again.

And another where he is holding on with literally one claw....top rear foot. In both photos, it's all a balancing act.

Since it was warmer and there was no snow, I took a look around "The Estate"

Here is the lake in our back yard. It drains fairly fast.

In a similar shot, you see our garage. My veggie garden will be the length of the garage and half the width of the yard at that point.

In my search for something, anything growing, I found Bearded Iris. How do they survive sticking out of the ground like that?

Here is a valiant little old-fashioned Shasta Daisy still showing a little green.

And here is the front half of The Estate.

Everything, including me, is poised and waiting to pounce on that bare brown garden.

LOL! Great photos of the disgruntled squirrel ... hehe.

As for the yard, looks like a blank canvas ... can't wait to see what you do w/ it!

Hi Olivia!! Good to see you. I'm anxious to get going. I'm getting help to dig the back veggie garden. We'll have to stear clear of the wetlands (no herons here though).

I'm watching for green growy things to show in the front beds, but I know it's still too early.

I'll keep you posted on any progress I make.

Thanks for visiting and saying hello!
You've certainly had your share of snow, as it seems so many of us have this winter.
Nice to see the ground for a change, isn't it?
Your squirrel photos are wonderful. We're lucky not to be bothered too much by them, so we can still enjoy them.
You sound like me...being distracted to take a quick photo of the birds :) We had a male and female cardinal at the feeders this morning. They've been coming every day for most of the winter, much to our delight.

Hi Kerry. Thanks for coming by for a quick chat.

I always have two cameras ready. I use my Nikon mostly, my husband also will grag it or our Nikon p&s if the mood strikes.

As soon as I say I always have the camera ready, I don't, and I miss the shot of the ages. LOL I'm so happy with digital (Nikon D-80) even though I have to play with them in PhotoShop a bit. I love the instant gratification.

I'm really anxious to start my garden. As you can see, there is nothing in the yard now....

Oooops, sorry. I meant, Kerri. :-)

Hi Coneflower,
Glad you have a clear yard and no snow in sight! Wish I could say the same, since we got another 8 inches late last week ... *sigh.*

You have a fantastic canvas to work on for your garden! That veggie plot should provide you with a lot of great stuff! Don't know if you have thought of this, but you might want to work it up by renting one of those big tillers to break everything up. We did our first beds with a shovel (way too much back breaking work), then we got a small tiller that we use now. Saves so much time and effort!

As for the iris, they like staying close to the surface and "don't like to get their feet wet" -- meaning it's better they rest on the drier side because too much moisture will cause rot. We meant to move our heirloom iris last summer but didn't get around to it yet... they were literally crawling out of the ground and need a place with more sun.

Keep us posted on your progress!

Hi IVG. Good to see you. I'm going to be even lazier than you suggested. I've hired a landscape person to come and prep it for me. It costs as much as I paid the neighbor kid to help me last fall with the front beds.

I remember planting iris once as deeply as it looks like they should be planted....never bloomed. Picked them up and replanted near the surface and voila! I read about it somewhere.
Actually, I'm going to have to move them soon. I don't like rows of little soldiers in my perennial bed so I at least need to clump them somewhere. Last fall I just wanted to get them out of the cardboard box my cousin gave them to me in and into the ground.

It looks like you will have so much fun creating your garden. I can't wait to see what you do :)

Those squirrels are so wily, aren't they!

I Ilona! The squirrels are amazing! Today I had the two feeders swung away from the railing but hanging close to each other. The squirrel clung to the wooden feeder, resting his weight on it and gently reached over to the "squirrel proof" one, barely touching it so he didn't trigger the weight limit which makes it "squirrel proof".

We have snow back again but I'm holding to the thoughts of spring.

So -- how are the garden plans coming along!? :-)

Heh! Funny you should mention that. I'm preparing a new post with updates on the empty yards. We've been putting in extra insulation upstairs and my "free" (aka blogging) time has been seriously reduced. I've got to get my priorities right again!!!
