Hogmanay and First Footing

Happy New Year to All!!!

My husband and I were very active in the Scottish Community in Columbus up until we moved to Whidbey Island.

In Scotland, New Years is a huge holiday. Here I'll ask you to go to google and look up Hogmanay, the Scottish term for New Years. Also google "first footing"... another Scottish tradition. According to this tradition, the luck you will have for the next year is determined by the person who is first to enter your house on New Year's Day. The very best luck you can have is for a tall, dark haired man to be your First Footer. He should bring a loaf of bread and a lump of coal with him. These signify food and fuel for the year.

We have participated in a few such celebrations. One of the most notable was at Mac's Cafe in the Gallery District in Columbus. It was great fun.

I hope you all have a very Happy New Year and enjoy good health, good food and enough wealth to keep you comfortable for the whole year.

You can bet I'd love a tall, dark man to walk through my door, with or without the bread and coal! One can always hope...

Happy New Year, CF - thanks for sharing your traditions with us!

Well, I'm not going to open the door today unless the tall, dark man is out there holding the appropriate gifts.

LOL, Beth! That wasn't exactly what I had in mind. :-)

Hello Donna. Thanks for stopping by.
Sorry, the tradition calls for bread and coal. :-)

Happy New Years Beth!

The bread and coal tradition sounds good, but I think I would rather go with the Publisher's Clearing House tradition to where I get millions of dollars every year. :)

I hope everyone who has traditions celebrates them, and anyone who has made a resolution keeps with it.

Hi FM. I would prefer your PCH tradition too! It would be fun to share it around.
