First year they sleep,
Second year they creep,
Third year they leap.
...referring to planting new perennials in your flower beds.
Well, my perennials, and in fact the whole bed, are in their second year and they're leaping already. So I need to expand. (Twist my arm)
This is the north bed in June 2009.

Here it is today.

Here's the south bed June 2009.

Here it is today, 11 months later.

You can see what the problem is....

Now I just need to get my landscaper friends (they have a company, Shaffer's Lawn Care)here to lift the sod and plant the edging for me.
I'll show "after" photos when they're done and I have it all planted.

Good Morning: Gardens are funny, they do things their way even though you think you have control of them. You don’t you are just the assistant. You can guide them, help them and they let you think you have control. Do You? Your post today shows how Gardens and Mother Nature do their thing. They are a visitor in your world as you are too there’s. As you learn to blend with them they do the same with you and all is great. Good post shows that you and your gardens love each other.
Have a wonderful day,
John
Hi John,
Thanks for the wise words. I do love my gardens.
Do you know how to get rid of ants in a flower garden? I have a persistent nest of tiny ones.
Thanks,
Hi CW,
Your gardens look wonderful and so well kept. My sil has been outside all week working on our flower beds. I very glad she did because if left up to me, I would start calling every weed I saw a beautiful flower. :)
Hope your w/e is going great and take care.

Hi FM. Always good to see you here. So glad to hear your leg is feeling better now that the staples are out. Will you need any more surgery?
W/e is good. And we finally have some warm, sunny days here.
Thanks for coming by.
Hi Beth: Some ants are ok. Are these little ones, Red ones, Black or whatever? Are they doing any damage ? Where are their Ant Hills in the lawn or in the garden. Tell me about them.
Have a great day,
John
John, they are little dark brown ones. I'm sure they are harmless just annoying and crawl over me if I try to dig or remove sod and that drives me nuts. The hills are not hills but are tunnels in the ground at the edge of a couple of my perennial beds and just where I want to expand my north bed.
They are back at work again after the boiling water attack from me, but they've carried all their dead out and laid then on the sidewalk where I have to see them. I think they're doing that to shame me. I feel bad enough without that.
The only sign of a hill is very small and right at the edge of the bed where it come up against the sidewalk or my block edging.
Beth: Without using chemicals you are on the right track. You may have to repeat the Hot water treatment several times. Try to find the home of the colony.
You could also use White Vinegar saturating the area around the colony and along the tunnels and trails. The vinegar may not kill them but will respell them and they may move to a new location.
Remember that the hot water and vinegar are also having an effect on other things in the garden. So use carefully particularly around your plants. Hot water and vinegar will kill or damage you plants.
Enjoy your day,
John
I had thought about using dilute vinegar but this is a new area and I didn't want to acidify the ground where I'll be planting.
Thanks, though. I'll keep on with the hot water.
quite amazing... I love how you are taking over your yard :)

I hate the ants that swarm over me and bite when I weed. I know where they are and try to just work very fast. Not always fast enough.
Hi Ilona, Do you remember the photos I posted of when we first moved in here? (I just looked and couldn't find it.) There was absolutely NOTHING in this yard, front or back...grass only. So I feel good about the results so far.
