Sunshine, Plants Growing, More Fun-Less Work

I just can't seem to do any better than to post every two weeks. Oh well. Even that is an improvement over some post times.

My gardens are finished...or as finished as gardens ever are. A true gardener isn't worth his/her salt unless she's moving things around and always planting new, but here it is.

The back veggie bed is going to town and is all planted.

That's 4 rows of peas in the far distance. They're doing great too. Also there are a couple ringers (3 store bought pepper plants, 2 fennel, 3 sage plants, and one egg plant, plus a host of Walla Walla onion sets) The rest are my home grown seedlings, tomatoes, banana peppers, bok choi, cabbage, lettuce, chives, a bizarre type of spinach, cilantro, parsley and basil. I also just planted some garlic cloves that had sprouted. I know it's the wrong time of year but otherwise they would have gone to waste.

The totally tomato bed looks good.

The plants had gotten so tall and straggly that I had to plant them sidewise. They don't seem to mind and have straightened up again. There is full sun on this bed starting late morning and all afternoon.

Finally, we made a decision about the third bed.

I was getting pretty tired, physically. It's been a lot more work than I'm used to, but it's good exercise. Anyway we decided to again shorten the middle bed. We were running out of soil anyway. So it's a nice small workable size.

I've planted 4 rows of carrots, and 2 each of radished, spinach, pole beans, lima beans, and black beans. Now I have the fun of watching the seeds sprout.

All three beds are filled. I have just one problem. I have a cucumber plant (store bought) to put somewhere. But where?

We have already had 3 home grown salads.

It's fresh from the garden, unwashed and pure (I did wash before eating). Bok choi, lettuce, parsley, fennel, oregano, sage and 2 chive blossoms. Fantastic!!!!

I have more to tell, but it'll have to wait for the next post. Hope everyone is well and that all your gardens are growing as you want them to grow.

Good Morning Beth: Looks good, now you can sit back and relax a little. Watching plants grow can be very relaxing and comforting when you are dreaming about the good meals up coming from the garden.

Have a Great Day,
John

Hi John. Thanks for coming by. I suppose everyone is getting tired of my veggie garden shots which look a lot alike. But they look so different to me. The growth of happy seedlings is awesome.

Hiya CF,

I think your pictures are great and I like hearing about your garden. Since I'm not a gardener it's nice to see things that others can do with plants.

Now if you ever want to know about slacking, I'm the person to go to. :)

Hi FM. LOL, I may need some lessons. Who would have thought that I'd be working so hard after retiring? Working in the garden is not work though. I love it!

It's good to have you out and about.

Hi Coneflower,
Your beds look fantastic from my view, and what a great variety of veggies you have! I just hope you don't have the bunnies around like we do or you may lose some stuff ... the two years we tried to plant fennel they ate them to the ground, same with the poor carrots, so keep an eye out for them!

Almost all our veggies are in at this point, except for some herbs and the ornamental corns. We now have planted 4 rows of sweet corn (spaced a week apart, and a few more still do be planted), have all the tomatoes in and the peppers planted in big pots. We got a weird kind of cucumber this year "Armenian Snake Cucumber" and it's already in, along with the acorn squash. If you need a place for your cucumber, if it's a vining type, you could always just plant it under a big tomato cage and train it up that. I've had that work for me in the past.

Keep posting! Even if it's just a couple of photos with 1-2 lines of commentary ... I always look forward to seeing your progress.

(And yes, I'm up very late because I can't sleep... I've had a stomach ailment for the past 3 days and hardly slept last night, and had to spend the day in bed. At least it's clearly on its way out now, finally!)

Hi IVG. We early on learned that we needed a fence around the main veggie bed, so we put up chicken wire. It's ugly but it seems to work. No more early morning surprises. Now we've filled in and planted the third and last bed. The radishes broke ground today. And about noon I saw a rabbit sitting in the middle of the bed. So, another chicken wire fence is called for. I've also made little chicken wire rings to surround the most delicious flowers in the front beds.

Sorry you've been under the weather lately. Hope it's nearly over now.
